Forum. The first email notification came as a pleasant surprise and I’m definitely thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I have heard and also read a lot of what this programme has to offer and I can’t wait to experience all of these – meeting and learning with aspiring leaders from neighbouring countries, living as a member of the local community, immersing in cultures very different from my own, and more – in a single trip. I look forward to embarking on this journey of self-discovery and returning as a better leader. This trip will also mark my first time stepping foot in Japan so I am sure I will have much to learn from everyone – participants, lecturers and facilitators alike. A huge thank you, in advance, to all involved for the great effort put into planning and executing this meaningful programme, year after year!
These two months abroad have definitely broadened my understanding of global cultures and helped me to develop a deeper sense of understanding, empathy and connection with other communities of the world which I previously never gave much thought about. My first impression of Japan was certainly positive, as I felt thoroughly welcomed and embraced by the warm Japanese on the day I touched down in the Land of the Rising Sun. The programme is designed with the forethought that encompasses a wide range of social and cultural activities such as the study tours, the Cultural Exchange day and the Homestay segment which I enjoyed tremendously. The activities allowed me to engage in meaningful dialogues, pick up new languages, and also exposed me to learning beyond the borders of the classroom. I am fortunate to have been presented a multitude of multilateral viewpoints over the past two months, which not only expanded my learning curve but also opened my mind to new and different ideas. I am deeply indebted to the committee at IATSS for their dedication and unwavering support during my stay in Japan. The diversity of the cross functional IATSS Forum staff created a holistic learning experience for all participants. Each member’s vibrant and personality helped us to adapt to the new environment quickly and kept us engaged in the core goal of the programme as we were constantly motivated to give our best. Once again, I am thankful for the opportunity to appreciate the richness of other cultures and at the same time, better understand my own. Above all, I am grateful to be able to forge strong bonds with new people I met during the programme, who are now my friends. At IATSS, I had the ride of my life. I hope you have yours too
